According to figures shared by Dmitry Bestuzhev, CEO of Kaspersky for Latin America and the Caribbean, Android is the main target for the attackers , so much so that by August of this year there has been a growth of 31.3% in this area. This does not mean that iOS users should lower their guard, for them there are also vulnerabilities.

The latter, notably, is the safest, in fact, when attack campaigns are carried out against them, they are aimed at special people, such as political leaders or drug lords, and usually cost millions of dollars; However, there are threats such as phishing that can steal sensitive data such as bank account numbers and passwords.

Attacks targeting Android are generally massive, in fact, a campaign to affect these devices can cost less than a dollar. They are usually more sensitive to receiving a malware attack that spies on the user, steals personal information, sequesters the computer or has remote access.

In fact, a Kaspersky report, shared in July, revealed that low-cost phone manufacturers such as Blue and ZTE , among others, intentionally preinstalled malware on these devices to allegedly capture user information and sell that data to third parties in order to generate an extra income that compensates for production costs and thus be able to sell their equipment at a lower price in the market.

A special note that Bestuzhev made at the congress is that cyber criminals pay special attention to mass media to generate a more efficient attack; In the region, according to a report from Net market Share, the operating system with more penetration is Android , with 70.11%, reason, which, added to its vulnerabilities, makes it a better target for these people.

What can users do to mitigate risks?

The recommendations given to the users of both operating systems is to have the habit of checking for new updates , this also includes mobile applications, since the companies behind these technological developments work to patch the gaps through which one of these could enter threats.

There has been much talk about the supposed “toxic stew of hell” that is Android, but the threat of malware is exaggerated. The truth is that most people will never encounter a problem because they do not leave the Play Store for applications. Specific manufacturers such as Samsung have made additional efforts to strengthen the security of the business market. But the careless nature of updates on many Android devices can seriously delay important security patches.

Quick updates are now more important than ever because security breaches are becoming more severe. Android is late in the world of updates, unless you have a next-generation Android device, so it is less secure. Because millions of Android phones are still running software that are years old, they can be vulnerable to serious attacks like Heartbleed and Stagefright .

Apple is firmly rooted in American companies and has also worked on improving security for consumers in general, especially with its Touch ID and Face Id on the iPhone X. As a result, it can be said that Apple is more secure.
